About this person
I've recently returned to my hometown Adelaide, in early November, to ease into a PhD in cultural studies at the Univ of Adelaide. This commences on Feb 1 and will run for 3 years. I've had a 40 year career in academe, the arts, b broadcasting, journalism, etc, mostly in Aust, but also in North America (where I lived for nearly 20 years) and increasingly in Asia (Japan, China, etc). I like socializing with people who are well travelled, cultured, educated, lively and curious. Also have something of a reputation as a host and raconteur (dont want to sound scary though), which may have to be downplayed while I get used to being a student again. Most of all, I cherish my own physical and mental space, peace and quiet broken by occasional bursts of well-tempered energy. I'm not a sports jock or health fanatic, nor do I over indulge in alcohol or food. As a druggie, I'm a total failure; I never learned to smoke marijhuana successfully. (Did I spell it correctly?) Also, I have no religious affiliation, and my politics are decidedly humanist-environmentalist, left of centre. I recently worked and lived in Canberra for 6 years, so have some experience of that hot-house environment also.
Important personal qualities
I'd like to live in an environment of ideas and possibilities, rather than materialism and careerism. Where conversation is paramount, over beers, a bottle of good red (Pinot Noir, etc) or whiskey (Chival Regal). My best conversations are usually around a fireplace with afore-mentioned libations and naked. I'd like to experience living with at least one gay Asian, as Asia has become an important factor in my life in recent years. With people who appreciate finer dimensions of life - politics, travel, movies, experiences, encounters, personalities - and not hung up on gym/bar culture. People who I could invite to other dinner parties, movies, weekends away. Not looking for partner/s, but simpatico souls.
Food sharing and furniture
Prefer to share food, but not into anything especially spicy. That said, I love Asian food, esp Vietnamese/Japanese. No specific requirements. I have most kitchen requirements (white goods, crockery, cutlery, a pantry of food etc). I also have 27 boxes of papers, files, books, etc - the backbone of my professional life which is essential for my research years.
Description of pets
I've recently owned an elderly Jack Russell terrier and fantasize about getting another. But at the moment, I don't have one, and that isn't essential. I am a dog-person. Cats try to convert me to feline-ism but are never successful.
