Description of the home

Hey folks!

Semester 2, 2025 applications for the Canberra Student Housing Cooperative (CSHC) are open now!

Are you; anti-racist, queer friendly, community oriented, ready to fight for housing rights AND in financial need? We want you!

We’re currently looking for new housemates to join our friendly student-run community at the Canberra Student Housing Co-op (CSHC)!

Women, Fems and Non-binary people will be prioritised. Open to all students worldwide, this includes the study of diplomas, degrees, apprenticeships, etc. You must be 18 or older to apply.

Who are we? Founded in 2010, the CSHC offers affordable, secure housing for students at Havelock House. It’s a community built on cooperation, shared responsibility, and mutual support. We continue a legacy of student activism, creating a home that fosters learning, personal expression, and collective living. In a central location (just a 10-minute walk to Canberra Civic Centre and 3 min walk to Eloura St Light Rail)

At CSHC, we all share the responsibility of keeping things running (cleaning, cooking, planning events, etc.), and it’s a great way to build real-life skills while making new friends and memories.

What to expect at CSHC!
Affordable rent (from $373.10/fortnight, bills included)
We’re a community made up of 5 housing units
Weekly compulsory Co-op meetings
Minimum of 3 hours per week contribution
Kitty paid monthly ($60)
An 8-hour planning day twice a year
Training up newer coopers
Shared dinners, chill hangouts, movie nights, gardening days & more!

About occupants
We’re the Canberra Student Housing Co-op — a friendly, queer-friendly, anti-racist student community based in central Canberra. Across our 5 housing units, we’re a diverse mix of about 29 students from all over the world, aged mostly 18–30.

Some of us are studying at ANU, UC, or CIT, and others are doing apprenticeships or diplomas. People here study everything from politics to physics to visual art. We’ve got gardeners, gamers, activists, bakers, musicians, and plant parents — and we all help run the co-op together.

It’s a chill, social, and respectful space — we share dinners, clean communally, and have weekly meetings to keep things running smoothly.
Compatible people
We’re looking for someone who values community living, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. A good fit for the co-op is someone who is:

Open-minded and inclusive (queer-friendly, anti-racist, welcoming to people from different backgrounds)

Willing to participate in keeping the house running (cleaning, cooking, meetings, etc.)

Good at communicating, especially in shared spaces

Financially reliable (we keep rent low by sharing responsibility)

Interested in collective living, not just renting a room

You don’t have to have co-op experience — just be ready to contribute a few hours a week, share the space respectfully, and be part of the community.
