Home Description
Description of the home
A beautiful 3-bedroom home on 1/4 acre of green land comprising two buildings separated by a large verandah. One building has an open plan lounge and dining space, a rustic but fully functional and well-equipped kitchen, and a study that I work out of. The first building is tastefully and simply furnished, including a lounge area that opens out to the deck outside and makes you feel like you're in the garden while you're on the sofa. There's no TV and I'd like to keep it that way, though obviously we can always watch something on the laptop. The second building houses the two main bedrooms (of similar size), a third unoccupied room that's currently being used for storage, and the shared bathroom with a huge stone shower over bath.
There is also a large, two-bay shed with tons of room for storage. Currently I keep my car in the shed and use the rest of the space for storage. There is space for car parking at the front of the house.
The house has wonderful natural lighting year-round. What's more, being at an altitude of almost 400 metres the area is always considerably cooler than on the coast and gets excellent breezes. This is why the house has fans rather than air conditioning; these are sufficient to keep us cool while helping to keep our electricity costs very low. The property runs off rain water and has a large tank. In the dry season we need to be conscious of water use, but I plan to put in a bore at some point soon. The house also has a small, 1.5 Kw solar electric system which goes a long way to keeping the electricity bills very low.
The garden is a work in progress. I've spent the last year cleaning it up and getting it ready for some planting. This year will be the year of the veggie garden!

Bills and expenses
Bills are shared equally. Internet is Wireless NBN with unlimited data. The connection is very reliable (I work off it), and is $34.99 per person per month. Electricity is variable and the bill comes each quarter. Some quarters the bill has been in credit because of the solar system, though this has been mostly while I've been by myself. I had my parents visit for three months and the bill was $40 for three months, so it's quite low. We don't pay for water because we run off rain water. Hot water runs on gas, and we'll share the cost of a gas bottle when the time comes to replace it. I haven't had to change it in almost a year, but I estimate the cost of that to be about $120-150.

- Travel
In terms of character, I'm an extrovert, but the pandemic has balanced me out a bit in this regard. I love to cook, am strongly learning-oriented (I spend a lot of time reading), and have a reputation for being direct and wanting to talk through things. I study and try to practice Stoic philosophy and have even started a Stoic group for the Cairns region. In terms of house-sharing, I am very neat and tidy, considerate and clean. I like sharing, but also need my own space and am very capable of respecting other's space. I'm not a party animal anymore, and am more likely to have a dinner party than anything else or spend the day out hiking or at the beach.
As I work from home, the ideal housemate would be someone that works outside the home, but this is not a non-negotiable.
I try to minimise the house's impact on the environment. This means being mindful of water and energy use and separating out waste carefully. I want to live with someone that shares this aim.
I'm not in a rush to fill the room, so my priority is finding someone that is going to be truly compatible.
